今回は12月らしく、楽しい話題です。

イタリアのお菓子"Struffoli"です。

"Struffoli"

New York City's Little Italy is a
00:06
fraction of what it used to be but one
00:09
surviving bakery is still thriving it's
00:12
the main attraction on Grand Street in
00:14
lower Manhattan and it's a staple for
00:16
Italian pastries you'll find many
00:18
traditional desserts but none more
00:20
popular than struffoli during the
00:22
holidays
00:23
this is Ferrara's and it's been making
00:26
the best holiday struffoli in New York
00:28
for over 100 years
00:29
I heard of Ferrara's as a young child
00:31
and coming back ever since that's about
00:34
60 years now it's an iconic institution
00:37
that is one of the few remnants left of
00:41
the neighborhood and it's great that I
00:43
can continue
00:44

00:55
it is cold in Little Italy today but
00:58
we're heading to one of the most famous
00:59
places in this neighborhood Ferrara's is
01:02
known for tons of classic pastries from
01:04
cannolis to tiramisu rainbow cookies but
01:07
especially struffoli around the holidays
01:09
so we want to know why is this the go-to
01:12
spot for time pastries in Little Italy
01:14
let's go find out
01:16
Ferrara started as a gathering place for
01:18
Italians on the Lower East Side in 1892
01:22
owners Antonio Ferrara and Enrico scopa
01:24
who were professional Baker's back in
01:26
Italy's decided to turn the club into a
01:28
cafe the original cafe a Ferrara became
01:32
popular among locals as one of the first
01:34
and only places to serve espresso in the
01:36
city but today customers come to
01:38
Ferrara's from much more than a cup of
01:40
coffee from famous cannoli to the
01:43
quintessential tricolor cookie Ferrara's
01:45
glass cases are never short of customer
01:48
favorites the professionalism and the
01:50
pastry whatever you choose in here is
01:53
good is really good but as temperatures
01:56
drop and Christmas comes closer the
01:58
coveted pastry turns to struffoli it's a
02:01
part of Italian holiday tradition to
02:03
enjoy this Neapolitan dessert which is
02:05
made of little balls of puff pastry
02:06
dough covered in honey and shaped into
02:09
wreaths between Thanksgiving and
02:11
Christmas bakers make 1300 wreaths of
02:13
struffoli a day people walk by and
02:15
understand right away what it is I put
02:18
up samples just some people can enjoy
02:20
and experience it which this is very
02:22
important to Italians but there's a
02:25
reason customers choose a wreath from
02:27
Ferrara's over other new york pastry
02:29
shops unlike most traditional struffoli
02:31
the Ferrara's version isn't fried we
02:34
bake us truthfully and a lot of people
02:36
fry this true flavor this being baked
02:38
last longer has less calories and it's
02:43
lighter
02:43
so they're four hours to police well
02:47
it's like crunchy but not hard and a
02:50
little bit of airiness it's just light
02:53
and sweet and I just couldn't believe
02:55
how many of these they sell a woman
02:57
walked in as we were sitting here and
02:59
she looked over and she immediately knew
03:00
that this was truthfully this dessert is
03:02
the dessert to get here around the
03:04
holidays
03:04
I might have to uh now that I know how
03:07
to make it
03:08
get out to the table it's really and
03:12
Ernest was telling us thousands and
03:15
thousands like fifty thousand borders of
03:19
truthfully get pushed out here on the
03:20
holidays so that is just mind-blowing to
03:22
me after years of success it seemed as
03:26
though nothing could get in Ferrara's
03:27
way the bakery was a true destination in
03:30
the neighborhood and one of the oldest
03:31
remnants left of Little Italy but in
03:34
February 2018 an unexpected turn of
03:36
events threatened the shops 125 year
03:39
history my sister calls me at seven
03:41
o'clock in the morning and says the
03:43
stores on fire flames broke out around
03:45
7:30 at Angelo's of Mulberry Street
03:48
these buildings are very close and
03:50
someone flicked the cigarette between
03:52
the buildings and a huge fire came up
03:56
I'm like oh my god we're in trouble I
03:58
walk in and everybody that's in the
04:00
kitchen is standing on the sidewalk and
04:03
I get to the kitchen and there's fire
04:05
coming in there's nothing I could do we
04:08
got to rebuild a third of the bakery
04:10
fortunately everyone was safe at
04:12
Ferrara's and many of the baked goods in
04:14
the glass cases survived the bakery only
04:16
lost two hours of business but the event
04:18
had a lasting effect on Ernest and his
04:20
team it was like a shift in reality
04:22
we've never had a problem and then all
04:25
of a sudden you're walking down the
04:28
block and you say this is still there
04:30
Ferraris is in fact still in its
04:32
original location from the 1890s and
04:34
it's still drawing in crowds for its
04:36
cups of espresso and freshly baked
04:38
desserts maintaining a century-old
04:40
tradition as one of Little Italy's only
04:42
surviving pastry shops every time we
04:45
always have a family visit a yogi spring
04:48
we have to come to Ferrara because
04:50
everything is just so delicious
